The GD900 Crystal is a slider phone with a 3-inch touch screen, and a transparent keypad that lights up when opened. But it's more than just gimmicky, see-through goodness--the keypad is a touch-sensitive controller, too. That means you can use it to move through menus, navigate the Web, and even write using handwriting recognition.
LG has thrown in gesture support too, so you can launch applications with a swipe around the keypad. This includes multitouch, as does the main display, so you can pinch your fingers to zoom in to a photo or map.
If this is a touch-happy overload, you can also use it normally, to dial phone calls, and there's vibrating feedback to let you know when you've hit the flat numbers.
So what's the point of having two touch screens? The reasoning goes that if you're basking in the glory of the GD900's screen--watching a video, for example--you don't want to block the action by waving your sausage fingers over the screen to zoom or rewind. And it's pretty freaking cool, too.
The GD900 uses the same S-class user interface we've seen on the LG Arena. One of our biggest complaints about the Arena was that the touch screen wasn't as responsive as we'd like, but based on the phones we tried, it's running with more vim and vigor on the GD900. The little spinning cube is still useless, but there are about five different ways to access each feature, and adding gestures means there should be a user-interface option for every user, if they can be bothered to learn them all.
We found gestures and handwriting recognition were accurate and responsive, and although we wouldn't use it for long texts, we could see handwriting coming in handy when you want to enter a few words in a Web form without fiddling with predictive text on the alphanumeric keypad.
Like the Arena, the transparent handset is no slouch when it comes to features. There's also an 8-megapixel camera, expandable memory up to 32GB, Wi-Fi, and HSDPA for speedy Web surfing.

Sony Ericsson Pureness
Following the launch of the first crystal phone of LG, Sony Ericsson has also put their conceptual design into reality.
The Pureness is one of those crazy brand statements where a company does something just because it can. In this case, it's making a transparent-screen phone. The phone's screen is gray on clear, a monochrome 1.8-inch display that's actually quite readable in person and looks absolutely terrific outdoors.
However, this phone costs $1000, it's kind of weird.Samsung AMOLED notebook
After showing a 14-inch see-through AMOLED screen at CES this year, the Korean company now says that testing suggests the PC could be in shops within the next 12 months. Sullivan expects that "all" Samsung's AV hardware could use the technology soon.
The company has already tested out transparent AMOLEDs on a small scale with the IceTouch, a media player with a 2-inch touchscreen. Until now, such displays have often been cost-prohibitive due to the price of an AMOLED, but economies of scale have grown to make at least smaller screens reasonable. The IceTouch should sell in the US for about $378 within the first half of this year.
AMOLEDs by themselves are considered an advantage over LCD through their thinness, their color accuracy and the absence of an energy-hungry backlight. Transparency is likely to be just a cosmetic feature at first, but it allows for notebooks, players and phones that lift the isolation of the user and helps handheld users see what's in view.
Using transparent AMOLED display technology can give more advantages to LCD not just because it has thinness amount but also could view picture with high color accurancy and the absence of an energy- hungry backlight.
Well, to find out the real performance of Samsung AMOLED notebook, we must wait till they officially release them for worldwide market this year.
Will you join the crystal world?

Will I join the crystal world? Well I have a high attraction towards it. The new LG Crystal GD900 meet my expectations in design and features, with the cool transparent alphanumeric crystal touch pad and the many high tech features as the 8.0 MP camera placed with an LED flash, image stabilizer, colour effects, self-timer and cont-shot (IN A MOBILE PHONE) just WOW! It is the first time that LG develops the S-class interface, very user friendly, easy and simple.
Let’s try and find out about the new crystal world!
Nice design and a new style for LG phones but I can’t find why to buy it! Features I found from this phone are MP3/AAC/AAC+/WMA music player formats, DivX/XviD/MP4 video player formats, WAP 2.0/xHTML, HTML browsers, 1.5GB of embedded memory with microSD card and the 8 megapixels camera. So compare to others the only thing that attracts my attention is the hand writing recognition, and camera but is it enough to change your phone?
Hmm...Touch-Overload in Crystal World? Well, even though Im not really a tech savvy person, it did manage to grab my attention. However, concerning the transparent touch pad; apart from being aesthetically ideal and providing certain first-time-usage value, I do not find it any different from other touchpads in function. Also, with the transparent screen in a laptop, wouldn´t it be disturbing to see movements in the background when you are, for example, watching a video? Just a thought...if anybody feels motivated enough to enlighten me concerning my queries, please go ahead.
aaakh so bad that people become socialy active only when ricardo sets it up as a graded homework!!
Anyway, the LG revolutionates the mobile phone industry with this concept of crystal and is quite well equiped especially the 8 megapixel cam, but unfortunately for what it concerns me the next phone i am waiting to buy is either the Iphone 4G or the windows phone 7....Both are exceptional phones and hard future competitors for this LG. Also it's there where i think this LG will fail, Iphone already have a great reputation and the new windows 7 phone is said to be the greatest phone ever since the Iphone.
Concerning the transparent screen, i dont know why it is presented as a new thing, because i already seen it 2 months ago with some apple leptops....
I think this crystal phone is just a start, and I am sure it would be developing in the future. personally I really like this kind of new stuff, and it can satisfied my curiosity !
But there's one thing I am not sure about is~~if the screen is crystal, is that means when I use that, other people can see all my personal secrets?
hhhh nice one cheng....
I find that the 'crystal' technology is very advanced and interesting, but I also feel that there isn't much point in having a see through screen on your laptop when all that is really different is probably the price since the display doesn't offer anything more than a normal screen would. The LG GD 900 is a bit more understandable because the esthetics are very attractive and a lot of consumers seem to base their mobile phone choice on apperance.
I find it very impressive but it's not for me, I'm yet to be convinced.
cheng cheng: only if they can read backwards =)
I think I have to agree a little with StrawberryGirl. Okey, it might be trendy to have a see through screen and all, but on the computer I think it can be distracting, being able to see through the screen. With the LG Crystal phone, I can´t believe that this idea is being launched now and not earlier. We´ve had touchscreen phones for sometime and I can´t belive that no one saw this money making oppertunity before, to add a keypad. Agree with Sasha, it is nice design and style, but I can´t see the reason why to buy it. Not convinced.
the technology still has to evolve (a lot) in order to arrive at the stage of a single crystal "sheet". It is going to take a lot of time i think.
The research on that technology should be watched closely because one day it will revolutionate a lot of things ( if of course, the is not something better that will be created).
I think that the devices we have seen that use crystal technology are very esthetically attractive. However, this is the only reason that would make me want to buy it. For instance, the crystal phone doesn't offer many more advantages than other non crystal phones. Besides, i also think that it would be very distracting seeing through the phone, and even more from a computer! Also, another thing that concern's me is that these devices seem very fragile and that may break easily. So, even if the design and appearance are very innovative and nice, i personally would not switch to the crystal world right now. However i would consider doing so when the crystal world is more developed and offers us more advantages that they do now.
I think that the technology is great but I think that it have to evolve before they launch it. It is going to be a new trend in some years. For the moment everyone is fascinating by the touch screen phones/smart-phones.
The phone looks attractive and have some great features but for what I do with a phone (calling&sending messages), I don't really need a touch screen/pad. So, personally I won't change my phone which works perfectly to a more sophisticated one which is going to call&send message like the one I have just to follow the new trend.
I don't think that the crystal screen will have a huge success since they are making huge progress i with LCD, I think that people will find it annoying to see through their screen while working,... that's why they will go for LCD screens in the future.
I think that in the future will be more focused on LCD technology...
Everyone who knows me knows I always have the cheapest phone on the market. 1) Because I get robbed 5 times per year in average and 2) Because I dont think that the visual appearance is THAT important, as long as it works proberly..
So I will not rush to the shop to purchase a see-through phone..
However, I must admit it looks kind of cool!
the phone looks amazing, i think LG did a good job, but i wouldnt buy it, simply because i will break it in 2 days, even if the crystal is strong,i am bad of taking care of sensetive things , i disagree with sacha, its good to see through the screen while working, then u can do another things, beside using the phone hahahah.....u know what mean!!
@zintani: I don't know what you mean?!
hahaahhahaha loool
I agree with Christian on the Crystal Laptop screen, seems like there isnt much point and when I showed it to my Dad he wasnt very impressed, my first doubt would be how annoying is it to look at a see through screen, you see everything behind it, and cant even concentrate on what your doing. Imagine watching a movie on that. Well nevertheless there will be plenty of people who will buy it so congrats to the Developers. God Save LG!
I can see myself joining the crystal world concerning mobile phones, but not quite yet. I take pretty good care of my phones, and really love the look of it. However, as previously mentioned, it could use some developing, and it adds nothing new to the market (apart from looks), plus I'm quite a basic phone user,i don't really use many applications... but maybe its time to go with the times, since they are 'a changing.
Concerning the laptop, the see through interface would probably annoy me rather than wow me, esp when watching movies.
I think it looks very stylish and cool, but that is not a strong reason for me to buy one right now. Especially since it looks very fragile, and I drop phones quite often.
However, I am pretty sure that in future this kind of technology will be developed, improved(since we are living in exponential times :)so I could consider it then.
Cheng your presentation was really interesting but i don't think that I can buy this phone about two reasons. First its expensive and the second reason is that the phone is fragile. On the other hand the design looks perfect:)
Well, here we are, LG. First of all, I'd like to say that the commercial value of that "cristal world" stuff is unquestionable. even though my personal 3 best are IPhone Google and Nokia. not mentioning the fact that Microsoft is comming up with something unbeatable, mind my words.
so, will i join the christal world? yes, absolutely. however I'd rather wait once the major players are going to learn from the mistakes of LG and only after that I will make my desicion. the technology used behind this is already shown in some of the IPhones concepts and due to the fact that the USABILITY of the product is a priority to me, i again would like to wait and see how the competition evolves.
It looks very nice..but I, personally prefer the idea of Nokia's Morph concept, which is way more futuristic and will create a new base line for the mobile world.
I find the crystal phones and laptops very attractive myself, and I do not think as many here do that being able to see through the screen will distract the person from doing work on the laptop, because anyways when there is a window open with videos e-mails or whatever, and if it's not maximized you still have the desktop picture or any other windows open and it has never been a problem to me. What has been a problem though is sometimes trying to find something on my desk and then finding out that it is right behind my screen. I also agree with Val, that there will be errors and that the major players will have the same technology more advanced, usable and efficient when it comes out. Let's wait and see!!
I am going to take sides with the people that are not convinced about it. I don´t see any use of this phone except the new crystal part and this is not quite enough.
Plus, I don´t understand why you need it when anyhow, the phone is touch screen and it can perform the same without the crystal pad.
I would definetely try it if it was someone else´s but I would not buy it for myself.
For now, this phone is for the posh.
With all the options that the LG GD900 has, I might join the crystal world for real. 8.0 mp camera, LED flash but most of all I liked how the control of the phone is done, at the video we can see that is easy and simple to work with the touch mode, even very cool I can say. The Crystal world is something new for me and I guess not only for me, knowing that u can see through your phone or laptop sounds and It looks awesome for me ! I believe that we can expect more interesting and innovative inventions in the crystal world! I'm looking forward.
